TRIO DETEKTIF

By : Alfred Hitchcock

My fave scene?

Partner In Crime

Author : Agatha Christie

Tommy and Tuppence is a duo detective made by Agatha Christie beside Hercule Poirot and Mrs Mapple. Not so famous like Hercule Poirot who has many books of him; this duo maybe only have several books. This is my second book I’ve read about this duo.

In this book, Tommy and Tuppence already married. Tuppence feels so boring with their monotonous lives and looking for experiences of adventure. As she said:

“I’m the person who wants something to do so badly. That is what I keep saying all day long.” “Women’s sphere,” suggested Tommy, waving his hand. “Twenty minutes’ work after breakfast every morning keeps the flat going to perfection. You have nothing to complain of do you?”

Luckily, Tommy’s boss offer them to manage a detective agency and uncover a Russian spionage activity. During their time to manage Blunt’s Brilliant Detectives, they successfully finish several cases.

This one is an easy reading – every cases is told as a short story. And fun too; since this duo, running the agency whatever way they fancy. During each adventure, they fashion themselves as one of the famous fiction detectives in their book collections such as Sherlock and Watson, Poirot and Hastings, Dr Thorndyke and Polton, The Okewood Brothers and many others. I must confess that many names from classic novel I never heard. (Hmmm… are they really good?) However, they do really well as brilliant detectives.

Finally, you can easily falling in love with this duo, Tommy and Tuppence. They are not very bright, but with a fair bit of courage, common sense and luck makes they are adorable. Their adventures are highly entertaining and of course, I will recommended this book.

Enjoy reading!

The Silkworm (Cormoran Strike’s 2#)

Author : Robert Galbraith

“..writers are a savage breed, Mr. Strike. If you want life-long friendship and selfless camaraderie, join the army and learn to kill. If you want a lifetime of temporary alliances with peers who will glory in your every failure, write novels.”

―Robert Galbraith, The Silkwor

I am not kidding when I said that I am waiting for Cormoran Strike’ second book. I am very impressed with his first novel and highly expected for this one. I can confess that this book was not disappoint me. But I not yet have time to write any review before, so this one is very late review.

After the Lula Landry’s case, Cormoran being one of the famous private detective in London. During his usual case which now around the reconnaissance of fraud, he is hired by the wife of author Owen Quine. His job is to find Owen who went missing after receiving news that his latest manuscript can not be published.

What they didn’t expect was they must follow a sadistic murder after they found the body of Owen Quine.

The story is fast paced, entertaining and enthralling. Cormoran Strike really successful to build his own fan. From the two books he already had, he is heroic without intending to be and has a great back story. He’s the illegitimate son of a rock star whose half-siblings grew up in privilege. Strike, however, had to go to war in Afghanistan and returned with only part of a leg. But he is not immersed in self-pity, but he build his life, not perfectly, but respectful.

And in the second novel we get to know more and deeper into Strike and Robin’s lives ,more of the family and friends of Strike and Robin appear in this one, which really enrich the characters and the novel overall.

One more thing, i love how this book describe the life in London. I’m not Londoner, so it’s description was really a helpful one.

Last thing, wait for the 3rd book of Strike to review. Yes, already bought and read. Will re-read and write a review soon.

The Cuckoo’s Calling (Cormoran Strike’s 1#)

Author: Robert Galbraith

Nam in omni adversitate fortunae infelicissimum est genus infortunii, fuisse felicem. Boethius, De Consolatione Philosophiae

Why were you born when the snow was falling?
You should have come to the cuckoo’s calling,

The Cuckoo’s Calling is a wonderfully entertaining crime story, and immediately catch my attention with full power. It’s a slowly developing story, observant and full with tedious interview, but it is needed to deep in the character itself and make me get to know more about Cormoran and Robin and their cool relation. Cormoran Strike is the best addition in this genre and I can’t wait for his series.

Here is the main character at this novel:

Cormoran Strike a wounded war veteran, with a troubled past, damaged love life and financial woe. Strike has left the army and starting a Private Detective. When Lula Laundry fall to her death from her balcony, he got the job to investigate whether she has been killed or she is suicide

Robin Elacott – temporary secretary, have a secret desire to be a detective. She helped Strike to do research and together trying to catch the killer.

Lula Landry – the famous supermodel, adopted daughter of a wealthy family. Her life is never in balance; the possesive mother, the drug addicted boyfriend, the never tired media; until her death fall from her balcony which make people thinking is this a suicide?

John Bristow – Lula adopted brother. Not satisfied with police decision about Lula death. He hired Cormoran Strike to investigate what happen behind Lula’s fall.

The setting: London

I never been in London, never get the chance. However it will be lovely to visit Picadilly Circus, where Robin gets her engagement ring.

12 Bar Cafe at Denmark Street. The detective office is located beside the cafe.

Kentigern Garden, the exterior of Lula Landry’s apartment.

And Mayfair Area

At last, i will happily recommended this book for anyone who like an enjoyable brainy story.

Pembunuhan di Wisma Pendeta

Title : Pembunuhan di Wisma Pendeta

Kasus Miss Marple.

I definetly agree. Memang kebanyakan manusia mirip-mirip

“Semua bergerak menuju titik tertentu. Lalu, ketika saatnya tiba – terjadilah itu! Titik Nol.

The Mysterious Mr. Quin

Title : The Mysterious Mr. Quin

Author : Agatha Christie

Rating : 3.5 of 5

Actually, this one is a bundle of cases with Mr. Quin (harlequin) as the red thread or a trigger if I can say and Mr. Satterthwaite as a bullet.

Who is Harlequin? I am confused between Harlequin and Harley Quinn the villain from DC Comics. If you are also never hear about harlequin, this is what I got from my little research from Wikipedia:
Harlequin (/ˈhɑːrləkwɪn/; Italian: Arlecchino[arlekˈkiːno], French: Arlequin [aʁləkɛ̃], Old French Harlequin) is the best-known of thezanni or comic servant characters from theItalian Commedia dell’arte. The role is traditionally believed to have been introduced by Zan Ganassa in the late 16th century,[1] and was definitively popularized by the Italianactor Tristano Martinelli in Paris in 1584–1585[2] and became a stock character after Martinelli’s death in 1630.

The Harlequin is characterized by his chequered costume. His role is that of a light-hearted, nimble and astute servant, often acting to thwart the plans of his master, and pursuing his own love interest, Columbina, with wit and resourcefulness, often competing with the sterner and melancholic Pierrot. He later develops into a prototype of the romantic hero. Harlequin inherits his physical agility and his trickster qualities, as well as his name, from a mischievous “devil” character in medieval passion plays.

Back to the Agatha Cristie’s book, however I miss the funny Hercules Poirot. And it makes this book not sit in high ranking of me 😊. But as a mystery cases, it is quite good.
